The Beatitudes

Matthew 5:3-10 (WEB)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Reflection

Jesus turns the world's idea of blessing upside down. This is one of the most loved passages in Scripture, and it still speaks powerfully to the theme of blessing. The Beatitudes turn the world's scoreboard upside down. The blessed are not the powerful and self-sufficient, but the poor in spirit, the mourning, the merciful, the peacemakers. God measures a life by a different standard than the one we are taught to chase. Which of these blessings feels furthest from how you measure your own worth? Let that be your meditation this week. Ask God to reshape your idea of a life well lived around his values rather than the world's. Read Matthew 5:3-10 again slowly, and let it shape how you live today — in your family, your work, and your church community. A prayer: Lord, teach me to value what you value. Where I chase status and comfort, redirect my heart toward mercy, humility, and peace. Make me blessed in your eyes. Amen.
